The Band Program at St. Charles East

The Band Program at St. Charles East is proud to offer nine different bands for musicians of all skill levels. In addition, there are opportunities to participate in ILMEA events and Pep Band.

Concert Band
Grade 9
Prerequisite: Participation in middle school band or consent of the instructor
Concert Band investigates musicianship through instrumental performance. Students are instructed in the following areas: tone production, technique, rhythm, and music theory. These concepts are essential in the ongoing study of introductory high school band literature. Marching Band is a required component of this course.

Symphonic Band
Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Concert Band or consent of the instructor
Symphonic Band investigates musicianship through instrumental performance. Students are instructed in the following areas: tone production, technique, rhythm, and music theory. These concepts are essential in the ongoing study of intermediate high school band literature. Marching Band is a required component of this course.

Varsity Band
Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Audition
Varsity Band investigates musicianship through instrumental performance. Students are instructed in the following areas: tone production, technique, rhythm, and music theory. These concepts are essential in the ongoing study of medium-advanced high school band literature. Marching Band is a required component of this course.

Jazz Band
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in a core choir, band, or orchestra class
Jazz Band is designed for the instrumental student interested in investigating the jazz genre. Students will acquire the knowledge necessary for the study and performance of introductory jazz literature. Students are instructed and assessed in many areas of musicianship, including: improvisation, critical listening, and the many styles of jazz, America‘s musical art form.

Jazz Ensemble
Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Audition and concurrent enrollment in a core choir, band, or orchestra class
Jazz Ensemble is designed for the instrumental student interested in investigating the jazz genre. Students will acquire the knowledge necessary for the study and performance of intermediate jazz literature. Jazz Lab
Grades 10, 11, 12

Jazz Workshop
Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Audition and concurrent enrollment in a core choir, band, or orchestra class
Jazz Workshop is designed for the student interested in investigating the instrumental jazz genre. Students will acquire the knowledge necessary for the study and performance of advanced jazz literature of the highest quality. This course covers advanced improvisation, critical listening, and the pursuit of the many styles within the jazz genre.

Wind Ensemble
Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Audition
Wind Ensemble investigates musicianship through instrumental performance. Students are instructed in the following areas: tone production, technique, rhythm, and music theory. These concepts are essential in the ongoing study of advanced high school and collegiate band literature. Marching Band is a required component of this course.

Wind Symphony
Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Audition
Wind Symphony investigates musicianship through instrumental performance. Students are instructed in the following areas: tone production, technique, rhythm, and music theory. These concepts are essential in the ongoing study of advanced high school band literature. Marching Band is a required component of this
course.

Uniforms and Concert Attire

Participants in the marching band will be fitted for a uniform and hat during summer band rehearsals.  These items will remain at school at all times.  Students should wear their black band t-shirt under the uniform for marching band performances.  Black socks and ALL BLACK shoes are also required.

Attire for band concerts is black pants and white shirts.  Gentlemen should wear a tie, black socks, and black shoes.  Ladies should wear blouses with a collar and sleeves, and black dress shoes.  NO SKIRTS OR DRESSES ARE PERMITTED.
